Appendix: Logistical database fields

Logistical database fields have the following properties.

Description

A unique name for the logistical database field. This description will be visible and presented in the system in all input and output data.

Important: The system uses and handles logistical fields in many ways. To prevent invalidating data and other problems, do not use the following characters in logistical field names:
space + ' " / : ; . , * # % ? ! < > { } ( ) [ ] | @ $ ^ & ~ =

Data type

The data type affects how information will be displayed in reports and input fields. The data type can be selected from the following:

  • Character – This will display and store the value as a string.

  • Integer – This will display and store the value as a number.

  • Real – This will display and store the value as a floating point.

If a Field Type is selected, the system automatically selects the default data type for the field type.

Length

Length defines the maximum length of the value.

Field type

If a field type is selected, the contents of the Description property are controlled by the system. Sometimes completely or after starting a tool or a function. If Field Type is left empty, it is controlled by users.

See the following topics for information on the possible field types.
