COS network
In a network of COS servers, the root server manages the common configuration which defines the shared COS objects as object types and attributes, for every project in the COS network. All libraries and projects in the COS network have the same attributes and object types. The root server also manages the replica servers.
The COS database is a storage for all kinds of objects and information in the project. The library database includes the common features for several projects, for example piping components, drawing symbols and drawing sheets, configuration objects, and so on. The primary storage for project data is the project database which includes the metadata of objects, such as the location of a pump. The physical information of that pump is referenced from library database. Thus, both databases are required to access the data model of a plant or ship.

The root server can manage both project and library databases. In the above picture, they are created in the Project (A) server which is actually a replica for a root server. The Project server has three replicas; first one manages Project (B) database and the others use a replica of the Project A database. All three replica servers use the replica of the library database.
