About the needed equipment

Point cloud files are rather large and there can be a large number of point cloud files in a single project.

Plant Modeller visualizes point clouds in the 3D views that show the modeled 3D geometry. When it visualizes point clouds, it needs to read the data from the binary disk files and send it to the display adapter for rendering. Thus the most critical resources are fast access to the point cloud data and an effective visualization engine. The former is even more critical. Here are our recommendations:

  • Use solid-state drives (SSD) for storing the imported point cloud files in CADMATIC format.

  • Allow Plant Modeller to use as much central memory as possible by closing other applications, if possible.

  • Your computer should have at least 16 GB of RAM memory.

  • When working with point clouds, you need more open views than in normal modeling. Thus, extra screen estate is very beneficial, and we recommend that you use two large, high-resolution displays.
