Save objects into symbols

Save objects on the drawing into symbols.

You can save objects either as symbol definitions to the drawing or as symbol files to the directory. In the latter method, the program also saves the symbol as a symbol definition to the drawing.

Do the following:

  • Save a symbol file to the directory:

    1. Select Save.

    2. Select the objects that you want to use to form the symbol.

    3. Confirm the selection by pressing Enter.

    4. Indicate a basepoint for the symbol. The program uses the basepoint when it inserts the symbol to the drawing later.

    5. Enter a name for the symbol. Follow the restrictions that are described below. The program adds a file format ending (.drw) to the name automatically.

  • Save a symbol definition to the drawing:

    1. Select  Save menu > Save to drawing.

When you name the symbol files, follow the Windows naming conventions. For more information, see Accepted file names and UNC names. The internal limit for symbol names in the program is 31 characters. You can save a drawing file with a longer name (up to 260 characters), but if you insert a drawing as a symbol, the program cuts the name to 31 characters. If you draw and save drawing files with the intention of using them later as symbols, save them with a name no longer than 31 characters.

Note that the program saves all objects and attribute definitions on unlocked layers that are within the area that you indicate for the symbol. You can add attribute definitions to symbols by drawing them using the Define attribute function. When you indicate the area to save for the symbol, include the attribute definitions to the area.
